Facility Services
Facility Services maintains CSUSM’s buildings, grounds, vehicles, utility allocations and expenditures, and all other capital assets entrusted to our service. Our core activities include maintenance, renovation, construction, moving, transportation, recycling, facility-use coordination, energy management, and security systems. In addition, Facility Services has responsibility for developing the building permit and inspection process for all new construction. Our mission is to provide quality facility maintenance, operations, and support services that foster a university of first choice while enhancing a safe and healthy learning environment.
People:
- The department received the 2006 Vice President’s Award at the June FAS Division Meeting in recognition for its efforts in winning the 2006 RecycleMania contest
- The department won the national Recyclemania championship title for the second year in a row, winning in two categories: Overall Grand Champion and for Recycling the Most Cardboard
Processes:
- Expanded the use of the Mobile FM, a handheld wireless workflow management device, to additional staff for work order processing and timecard input
- Fabricated and installed three additional light fixtures on the NW corner of Craven Road to improve safety and security for Parking Lot D access
Campus Community:
- Continued collaboration with the non-profit groups in Mexico for the diversion of surplus furniture and equipment
- Met with the VP of Operations from Merchants to go over concerns with the level of custodial service, resulting in an increased level of supervision and service on campus
- Changed lights in the USB Parking Lot J from low pressure sodium to high efficiency T-5s as a pilot program for our campus re-lamping project resulting in a significant improvement in lighting as well as a 25% reduction in energy consumption
- As part of the Energy Partnership Projects, changed lighting in the USB Conference Room and University Hall 441 to a new type of indirect lighting fixture to evaluate the effectiveness of improving the lighting functionality of classrooms and conference rooms
- In a collaborative effort with the Physics Department, installed a 48-volt solar panel on one electric cart to evaluate the effectiveness of charging the battery via the solar panels
- Compiled a Master Plan schedule for Merchants to provide more systematic and complete custodial coverage for the campus
- Merchants hired a new supervisor to oversee the campus which resulted in improved and more consistent service; met with Merchants and Core Management to roll out the new Master Plan Program to equalize routes with color-coded floor plans to better define the custodial assignments
- Continued collaboration with Sierra Vista High School to provide work experience for their Disabled Student Program
- Completed the repaving of Craven Road Eastbound lanes
- Completed several energy conservation projects that resulted in saving 721,634 kWh and avoided annual costs of $90,000
- Completed the relocation and expansion of the campus Hazmat Center
- Completed the move-in process of the Markstein Hall Business Building
- Completed the first phase of the Craven Renovation Project office moves
Resources and Regulations:
- Power Systems conducted ground fault testing on the campus electrical system and indicated our campus electrical system was the best maintained system that they have seen, except for AT&T
