University Police

The purpose of the University Police Department is to consistently provide ways to promote and preserve a safe and secure academic environment, to deliver quality law enforcement and community services in a professional and sensitive manner, and to establish honest and effective partnerships with the campus community.

People:

  • Department received training on the law enforcement records management software (RIMS) operating system
  • Trained all Parking Officers and Community Service Office (CSO) on  California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) polices and procedures
  • Developed formalized policy of letters of commendation

Processes:

  • Sent bi-weekly email update to each member of the department
  • Established department Outlook calendar to track all department training
  • Initiated a training request and approval process
  • Placed all General Orders and Policy and Procedure manual on-line
  • Completed New Safety Escort policy and posted flyers on campus
  • Installed new police computer Server for new RIMS Software
  • Collaborated with the Escondido Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department to quell any disturbance or violence during the immigration legislation protests on campus; all events were without incident
  • Developed method of tracking crime prevention presentations through RIMS
  • Developed a collaborative relationship with the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station and Palomar Community College Police in the areas of: radios, Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) training, mutual aid

Campus Community:

  • Worked with the University Foundation to install a new alarm system
  • Officers manned a static display on campus for the first week of the semester
  • Offered a Citizen Academy to the campus community
  • Offered RAD Class to the campus community
  • Worked with ASI to secure special discount rates for students using the tow companies the department uses from our rotational list
  • Participated in DUI/safety checkpoint with the North County Traffic Safety Council (NCTSC)
  • Continued to work with The Pride to get the word out about our services
  • Completed the 2006 St. Patrick’s Day Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) informational campaign

Resources and Regulations:

  • Had a successful POST audit with no discrepancies found
  • Received a rating of “excellent” on CLETS inspection
  • Received a new Deptartments of Homeland Security grant
  • Received approval for the department’s second mnuemonic for CLETS
  • CLETS Advisory Committee reviewed the department’s operations and did not find any discrepancies
  • Secured funding for the “Golden Elite Dispatch Console”  to enhance communications with neighboring agencies
