Funded Project: Faculty Discuss Writing
Call for Participation
The Writing Center has received funding through an Instructionally Related Activities award from the Division of Student Affairs for a video project to enhance students’ understanding of university writing. Under the project, we will film faculty from up to 15 departments on campus discussing their expectations for student writing and their own personal relationship with writing. Questions from areas such as the following will be used to structure a one-hour interview that will be edited down to several shorter informative videos. Students will be able to access these at the Writing Center, through the Writing Center website, in classrooms or through professors’ course management sites.
1. Faculty members’ own writing process
2. Reasons faculty and the university ask for writing and impose specific guidelines for writing
3. Faculty members’ expectations for student writing
4. Genre-specific guidelines for faculty members’ fields
Participants will work with me to prepare a specific list of topics they will discuss. I hope to film interested faculty roughly through week 12 of this semester. I believe these videos can help newer students understand better why and what they write, and help upper-division students understand genre conventions for their major fields.
