Peer Coaching Program
Program Description
The Peer Coaching program serves faculty from across the university representing a range of disciplines. Participants include first year faculty as well as those teaching in the classroom with more than 20 years experience. The common goal that unites participants is the desire 1) to enhance and improve our pedagogical techniques in the classroom by cooperating and collaborating with other faculty; b) to support each other as we make improvements in our pedagogical approaches; c) to assess student learning in the classroom; and d) to assess the relationship between student success and our teaching practices.
Commitment
Each successful applicant is paired with a partner from another college or division. Most participants apply as individuals and we match them with a partner based on common preferences and goals. You may also apply with a colleague as a pair. Remember that the matches must be cross-college or cross-division.
Admission to the program is for a one-year term. Many applicants apply to renew their membership, and this is always welcome. Each peer coach should visit his/her partner’s classroom twice per semester, consult with each other to process feedback and attend the meetings of the whole group when possible.
At the end of the term, each member of a peer coaching team will be required to submit a brief project report.
What You Can Gain
Faculty who participated in the program have told us that they have benefited in many ways, including receiving feedback promptly enough to make improvements during the semester, increasing knowledge about best teaching practices in different disciplines, gaining a trusted colleague with whom you can share your teaching successes and failures, producing “items” that illustrate teaching effectiveness, and sharing a sense of collegiality with peers across the campus.
