Film Studies Program Overview

About the Film Studies Program

The primary purpose of the Minor in Film Studies is to enhance student learning regarding the:

  • production of film
  • global history of film
  • interpretation of film
  • uses of film
  • art of filmmaking

Our goals also include educating an existing public, supporting the University's Mission Statement, and building long-term community partnerships. This minor is intended to provide not only solid undergraduate preparation for those students planning graduate work in film studies, but also for the university to participate in the greater cultural community of North San Diego County. Students in this minor will have the opportunity to make a contribution to this cultural base.

The minor in Film Studies will prepare students for a range of professional opportunities requiring critical thinking, historical awareness, research, and strong written and oral communication. Students in Film Studies develop competence in film analysis, critical viewing and writing, as well as visual literacy. Students explore cinematographic expression and form while noting diverse perspectives, methods and products.
