Types of Aid Grants - gift money awarded on the basis of financial aid eligibility. Grant aid does not have to be repaid. Loans - money borrowed to assist with educational costs and which must be repaid with interest. Loan programs and terms vary depending upon financial aid eligibility. Work-Study - Money earned through employment on campus. The award is paid based on the number of hours worked and the hourly rate of pay. Scholarships - Gift money awarded based on academic achievement, program of study, community involvement etc., which does not have to be repaid. The Cal State San Marcos Financial Aid and Scholarship Office makes use of a variety of grant, loan and work options when awarding financial aid.
The federal Pell Grant is awarded to eligible applicants who have not yet
received a first Bachelor’s Degree or are pursuing the Teaching Credential and
have an expected family contribution (EFC) below 3850 for the academic year.
In 2004-05, the Pell Grant award amounts range from $400 to $4,050 per
academic year, based on level of eligibility (EFC) and full time enrollment
status. A student’s maximum award for his/her EFC is divided between the
enrollment terms. At Cal State San Marcos, maximum eligibility is divided
between the fall and spring terms. If you attend full time, at least 12
units, for both the fall and spring terms you will receive your maximum
award for the academic year. Students who attend less than full time during
either the fall or spring terms will receive an amount less than the maximum
award for the academic year. Students who have attended less than full time
for one or both terms will have a portion of their Pell eligibility
available if their enrollment continues during the summer term at Cal State
San Marcos. The minimum unit requirement for each term is listed on
your award letter. Your award is based upon the enrollment status listed.
Since the Pell Grant is awarded per term, your award for one term may differ
from the award for another term if your enrollment varies. The table below
shows how minimum units relate to the Maximum Award percentage received for
each term if the Maximum Award is $4,050 for the academic year. Example based on Maximum Award: Minimum units shown on Award
Letter for term: Per cent of Maximum Award

$506 Spring Pell Grant *There are two half-time minimum units, because the
state fee is different at 6 units and at 7 or more units, and other aid
offered may be affected. If you are registered in less than your minimum units,
your Pell Grant will be affected. Each term your units of enrollment are
verified by the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office after the add/drop
deadline. Your Pell Grant amount will be adjusted to the amount reflective
of your enrolled units at the end of the add/drop period. If you are eligible for a Pell Grant and will be
registered in less than 12 units at Cal State San Marcos, but will also be
registered in transferable courses at another institution, you may be
eligible for concurrent enrollment consideration. An approved concurrent
enrollment allows us to take into account your units at both institutions
for the purpose of calculating your Pell eligibility. See the section on
Concurrent enrollment later in this handbook. Pell Grant and the
Teacher Credential Program Students taking coursework required for a preliminary (first) state teacher
credential may receive the federal Pell Grant. ONLY the courses
required for the state credentialing may be considered, though other courses
may be needed by individuals and to move beyond the preliminary credential.
Students must be taking at least 6 units of required preliminary credential
courses to be eligible for the Pell Grant. Students taking required
pre-requisites, who already have a preliminary credential or who are moving
to 2nd
level credentials are NOT eligible for the Pell Grant.
After initial awarding, if funding is available, priority is given to:
2004-05 award levels are: $1,000/year $500/semester Students awarded FSEOG must be registered in at least 6 units at Cal State San Marcos to receive the grant.State University Grant is funded through the California State University’s Chancellor’s Office and is given to eligible California residents to assist with the cost of state fees. SUG is awarded based on EFC. Generally, students with an EFC of 4000 or below, and who are charged the state fee are eligible to receive a SUG. The amount of the award is usually 100% of the mandatory state university fees but may vary between academic years due to available funding. SUG is a limited fund and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Students whose financial aid is processed after the SUG funds are fully allocated will be put on a wait-list. If SUG funds become available at a later date, enrolled wait-listed students will be awarded. Students not eligible for SUG are those:
EOP awards are also based on enrollment.
The EOP Office reserves the right to cancel EOP Grants for students who fail to meet EOP requirements. Questions concerning EOP should be referred to the EOP Office at (760) 750-4861.
CSAC will then determine the students who meet their eligibility criteria and notify those who have been awarded. Cal Grants A and B are renewable for up to four years of full-time attendance. CSAC will notify recipients who have remaining eligibility. Once a Cal Grant is awarded, to be eligible for subsequent years, a student must:
Note: If you change schools, you must notify CSAC in order to activate your Cal Grant at your new school. If you do not attend school for a period, contact CSAC regarding a Leave of Absence. Is awarded to low and middle income undergraduates who are California residents and covers the cost of the state fee. For 2004-05 the state fee at CSUs for undergraduates is:
Cal Grant will not pay for enrollment of 1 - 5 units. Cal Grant and State University Grant both pay the state fee. Since the state fee cannot be reimbursed twice, if you are awarded a Cal Grant and already have been given a State University Grant by Cal State San Marcos, the State University Grant will be removed. Cal A students pursuing their teaching credential, may request a 5th year of eligibility if they start a credential program within 15 months of graduating. the Cal A can be renewed for the 1 year of full-time or 2 years of part-time attendance. To receive the 5th year Cal Grant benefit, students must submit a 5th year form at the time they are admitted to the credential. The form is available in the Cal State San Marcos Financial Aid and Scholarship Office or at www.csac.ca.gov.
Is awarded to low income, first generation college students. Cal Grant B is renewable for 4 years. This grant provides an access allowance for freshman the first year of $1,551 at full time. In years 2 - 4 of Cal B eligibility, in addition to the access fund, students receive fee benefits equal to the Cal Grant A noted above.
Cal B Access funds are prorated based on attendance:
Students attending courses concurrently at Cal State San Marcos and a community college can apply for a concurrent enrollment to increase the Cal B Access. Please refer to the section on concurrent enrollment for more information. If a student is receiving the Cal B fee payment, and has been awarded a State University Grant, the State University Grant will be removed. If the student is eligible only for the Cal B subsistence, then the student remains eligible for the State University Grant. Cal B students pursuing their teaching credential may request a 5th year of eligibility, if they start a credential program within 15 months of graduating. The Cal B can be renewed for the 1 year of full-time or 2 years of part-time attendance. To receive the 5th year Cal Grant benefit, students must submit a 5th year form at the time they are admitted to the credential. The form is available in the Cal State San Marcos Financial Aid and Scholarship Office and at www.csac.ca.gov.
