Student Rights & Reponsibilities

As a student receiving state and federal aid, you have certain rights and responsibilities.

You have the right to:

  • Know what financial aid programs are available.
  • Know the financial aid application deadlines and priority dates.
  • Be treated equally and fairly in determining eligibility.
  • Know how eligibility is determined.
  • Request an explanation of aid that has been awarded.
  • Accept or decline some or all aid that has been offered.
  • Appeal results determined by the Cal State San Marcos Financial Aid and Scholarship Office.
  • Have all personal information kept confidential.
  • Request a review of eligibility based on special circumstances.

You have the responsibility to:

  • Read all financial aid information that has been provided (including instructions on forms).
  • Return all requests promptly .
  • Meet appropriate deadlines and priority dates.
  • Complete forms accurately and correctly (intentional misrepresentation is a violation of the law).
  • Notify the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office of changes in enrollment, graduation date, and living arrangements.
  • Notify the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office of changes in resources (scholarships, veteran’s benefits, fee waivers, etc.).
  • Notify Registration and Records of name changes and changes to address and phone number.
  • Use financial aid funds towards educationally related expenses (which can include some living costs).
  • Receive aid at only one institution for the same enrollment period (this does not apply to students receiving a community college Board of Governor’s Grant).
  • Reapply for financial aid each academic year.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as noted in this handbook.
