When is the General Scholarship Application Due?

Every year the General Scholarship Application has a priority deadline of March 2nd.  For full consideration you should submit your application by that date. However, applications will continue to be accepted through October. We encourage all students to submit an application as soon as possible to be considered for any unused scholarship funds. Be advised that the General Scholarship Application is available every January.

How Do I Apply For Scholarships?

You will need to access and complete the General Scholarship Application, available online at www.csusm.edu/finaid/scholarships. There is one application for all scholarships awarded by Cal State San Marcos. By using one application we believe you will have a significantly improved, one-stop opportunity to apply for all possible institutional scholarships available at Cal State San Marcos. You must submit one copy of the application and essay, and we recommend you keep one copy for your records. Applications and essays can be emailed in a Word format to scholarship@csusm.edu, can be mailed to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office, can be faxed to (760) 750-3047 or can be walked into the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office on the fourth floor of Craven Hall Room 4204.

When Will Recipients Be Notified?

Scholarships will be awarded during the Fall, Spring and Summer. If you are selected for a scholarship, a congratulation letter will be mailed to you stating the name, amount and criteria associated with that scholarship. Included in that letter will be information about how your scholarship will be disbursed. The award is contingent upon your written acceptance, to be returned within three weeks of the date of the letter.

Will A Scholarship Affect My Financial Aid?

When you accept your financial aid award, you agree to report to the Financial Aid Office any additional resources awarded and/or received including, but not limited to scholarships, stipends, educational grants from campus and outside sources. If the Financial Aid Office determines you have been over-awarded, your financial aid award may be reduced.

Who Is Eligible To Apply For Scholarships?

Scholarships are available to students of all backgrounds, abilities and levels. And are not limited to students with high academic averages, or extraordinary abilities. Scholarships are available to students planning to enter college, students who are transferring from another college, or even for graduate school. High School students should start their scholarship search during their sophomore year.

How Do I Request Verification of Enrollment For An Outside Scholarship?

If you receive an outside scholarship, and your donor requires proof of enrollment, you can contact the Scholarship Coordinator in the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office at Cal State San Marcos (760) 750-4855. Please note that enrollment verifications will not be completed, until after the Add/Drop period.

What is the Process for an Outside Scholarship Check?

When a student receives a scholarship from an outside source, such as a Community Organization, Church Group or Community College, the scholarship check should be made payable to California State University San Marcos and should be mailed to:

Financial Aid and Scholarship Office

San Marcos, CA 92096

Checks should be made payable to Cal State San Marcos and include the student’s name and social security number. A letter describing the criteria and requirements of the scholarship is also very helpful.

Can I Defer My Fees With an Outside Scholarship?

If the amount of your scholarship meets or exceeds the cost of your fees, then yes you can defer your fees with a scholarship. You must bring to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office a copy of your scholarship award letter, that includes the dollar amount, the disbursement criteria, and when the scholarship check will be mailed to Cal State San Marcos. . If the scholarship does not cover the full cost of fees, it is the student’s responsibility to pay the difference in full. Questions regarding fee payment should be directed to the University Cashiers Office at (760) 750-4494.

Can I Defer My Fees With an Internal Scholarship?

If the amount of your scholarship meets or exceeds the cost of your fees, then yes you can defer your fees with a scholarship. A copy of the scholarship award letter must be submitted to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office in order for a deferment to be processed.  Students that are selected for a scholarship awarded by Cal State San Marcos will be deferred from fee payment, for up to the amount of the scholarship. If the scholarship does not cover the full cost of fees, it is the student’s responsibility to pay the difference in full. Questions regarding fee payment should be directed to the University Cashiers Office at (760) 750-4494.
