University Advancement partnered with the College of Humanities, Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences to host a VIP reception for donors and friends of the arts prior to the Feb. 26 Arts and Lectures concert featuring Dr. Ching-Ming Cheng. Guests – many of whom were on campus for the first time – met faculty and President Haynes and learned how the University celebrates and encourages the arts.

The Annual Scholarship Reception, held this year on February 28, was a celebration of the spirit and generosity of CSUSM's donors, as well as an opportunity for students to thank those who contributed to their success. Over 100 guests were in attendance to hear the personal stories of four student speakers and three donors. The event is one of the most highly anticipated for University Advancement staff who work closely with Financial Aid to coordinate and make the evening a success.
The next Advancement special event is the 2013 Annual Gala on June 8, 2013.
