University Overview
Aarhus University, founded in 1928, is the second largest university in Denmark with 35,000 students and more than 40 departments offering a wide variety of majors in the humanities, arts, social sciences, and sciences.
Unlike many European universities, Aarhus has a park-like campus located in the center of the city. Each year more than 450 international exchange students from more than 250 universities worldwide come to Aarhus University to study for one or two semesters. This year alone, Times Higher Education QS World University Rankings ranked Aarhus #125 out of 17,000 universities worldwide in terms of overall academic excellence!
City Overview
The city of Århus was founded around the year 900 at the time when the Vikings ruled the country. Today, with a population of 250,000, Århus is the second largest city in Denmark and known as the capital of the provinces with its thriving business and commercial sector as well as its many schools and educational institutions. The city hosts more than 35,000 students of higher education, making Århus a young and vibrant city.
Århus combines a country setting with all the advantages of city living. Being situated right on the waterfront, it is close to sunlit beaches and refreshing green woods. In addition, Århus offers all the usual city benefits, such as restaurants, cafés, parks and gardens, theaters, art galleries, shopping centers, and night clubs. Cultural events take place all year round and the city has an international reputation as a music center.

Academic Focus

English language courses are available in many disciplines including: Biology, Chemistry Computer Science, Economics, Literature, Political Science, Psychology, and Women’s Studies. Click here to view current courses instructed in English. Please note: Most students should take Bachelor level course work unless they have already taken several classes in their major field of study. Masters level courses are equivalent to our senior level and will require the completion of prerequisites for entry.

Teaching is generally structured around lectures, tutorials, and practical exercises. Final grades are usually based upon a comprehensive exam.

All work transfers back to San Marcos and can be used to fulfill all graduation requirements.

Class Level: Upper-division status (completion of 60 units)

GPA of 2.75 or above and good academic standing to departure.

Prerequisites: Some courses require significant experience in the field. Read the Aarhus course description for information on prerequisites.
- Special Note to Business Majors: In order to receive credit for upper-division courses abroad, you must have already completed your Pre-Core course work at CSUSM.
Units
15 semester units/30 ECT units (European Credit Transfer system). Typically this works out to 3-4 classes/semester.The European Credit Transfer system is calculated in a 2:1 ratio. For example, a 10 ECT unit class will count as 5 CSU semester units.

Estimated Cost
- Students pay their normal State University Fee to CSU San Marcos, currently $3,649/semester. No tuition or fees due at Aarhus University.
- On-campus residence: $350-$550 per month; Off-campus residence: $275-$625 per month
- Health Insurance: $40/month
- Cost of meals and personal expenses will vary, but average $650 per month.

How to Apply
- Visit the Aarhus University website at http://www.au.dk/en/internationalcentre/ to learn about the University and read the Exchange Student Guide.
- Consult with the CSUSM Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 to determine if you are eligible for this program.
- Consult with a faculty advisor in your major department to determine if the Aarhus courses will count toward your major. If so, complete a Study Abroad Credit Approval Form.
- Order an official transcript from CSUSM and any other college from which you have taken a semester or more in classes (even if you have already transferred credit to CSUSM). Please send the transcript(s) directly to Global Education, c/o Tiffany Gabbard, Craven 3200, 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Rd. San Marcos, CA 92096-0001 or pick up in person and deliver to Global Education (preferred).
- Submit an online application form and upload your official CSUSM (and any transfer college) transcript(s). Print out a copy of your online application and bring this and your official transcript to the Study Abroad Advisor to keep on file.
- Submit a photocopy of your passport along with your medical disclosure form, personal conduct agreement, air travel release form, and proof of travel medical insurance to the Study Abroad Advisor.
- Attend the pre-departure orientation and consult with the Study Abroad Advisor as necessary regarding the Residence Permit process after Aarhus acceptance.
