Training in Animal Care and Use
Proper training and documentation thereof is a requirement by OLAW whose guidelines are followed by CSUSM policy. In order to meet our training and documentation requirements, the IACUC committee has set forth the following.
IACUC Members
All IACUC members will take the web-training called "Essentials for IACUC Members" on the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) site. This training must be updated every three years. CITI Instructions
Also, The following is a link to on-line training for IACUC members on how to conduct facility inspections.
Principal Investigators
All PIs with approved protocols will take the web training called "Working with the IACUC," at the above web site. This training must be updated every three years. CITI Instructions
Research Assistants
All PIs with approved protocols are responsible for training their research assistants/technicians. For each person working under the PI, the form called "Animal Use and Care Training Documentation Form" should be filled out by the PI in accordance with the guidelines and sent to Linda Collins at the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects. This form can be found on the IACUC Forms page.
Classroom Teaching Projects
All PIs with approved protocols that involve classroom teaching projects (e.g., lab exercises in PSYC 391) should clearly state in the SYLLABUS that training relevant to the lab exercises will be given by the instructor. A copy of that syllabus should be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, Craven Hall, Room 5210.
