Faculty Advising
We want to formally introduce to you two new full-time Human Development faculty members who joined us this Fall, Drs. Sawssan Ahmed and Denise Chavira. Both faculty members are clinical psychologists, but each represents a different HD concentration.
Dr. Sawssan represents the health concentration, because of her research and expertise in the health area. She does research on socio-cultural factors (including perceived racism, religiousness and ethnic identity) and its relationship to physical and mental health of adolescents of color.
Dr. Chavira represents counseling because of her work in the counseling area. She does research on barriers to treatment and models of service delivery for children with anxiety disorders and rural Latino populations.
Please know that the three of us in HD will serve as your faculty advisors. That means you will come to us when you have questions about the major, courses for the major, course substitution approvals, and overall advice on career choices and options. As of now, you will have one faculty advisor assigned to you based on your last name:
Dr. Fernando Sorian (A - Gob)
Dr. Denise Chavira (God - O)
Dr. Sawssan Ahmed (P - Z)
Contact information for faculty can be found by navigating to the faculty directory (see link on right hand side).
You will continue to see Silvia Grover, Academic Advisor for HD, for questions about where you stand in terms of graduation (e.g., “Given the classes I’ve taken, what will it take for me to graduate?”). Schedule an appointment with Silvia through the Advising Scheduler.
