ECON 201 and 202

I teach both Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.  In the past, I required students to purchase a text that could be used for both 201 and 202. The CSUSM bookstore made this text available as a combined text at a cost of $270, or in a split version ebook for either Micro or Marco, at $125 each.  At the CALM kickoff meeting, several of the publishers spoke about ways to lower the cost of their texts. This workshop effectively opened my eyes and allowed me to think of various ideas and possibilities.  Later, I met with the Cengage Learning representative, and contacted the local district manager. I had a target price in mind of around $65, as a result of surveying my students.  After going back and forth for almost two and a half months, we (Cengage and myself) were able to design  customized versions of the Microeconomics and Macroeconomics texts which are available as either an ebook or a loose leaf version.  Students can buy the ebook bundled with the Mindtap supplemental online materials for around $110 from the bookstore. They can also purchase Mindtap as a stand-alone if they find used copies and I ave placed a few copies on library reserves for my students.

In the fall I have two sections with about 95 students total, but the impact is even larger as other faculty in Economics have adopted this solution as well.
