Campus Technology Highlights
Technology drives much of our modern global economy. Being comfortable with the latest tools provides a competitive advantage that's more important than ever. As one of the newest four-year public colleges built in the United States, Cal State San Marcos has always had a lead in applying technology, with a commitment to staying current.
While an increasing amount of instruction is happening online these days, most of us still learn in the face-to-face environment of the classroom. IITS is dedicated to providing the most up-to-date and well-thought-out classroom technology possible. All classrooms on campus are “smart” classrooms – equipped with a variety of tools to support teaching and learning. Click through to see interactive panoramas of all classrooms.
The IITS refresh program replaces computers on campus every four years. This includes computers used for teaching in labs, as well as the ones on faculty and staff desktops. The refresh program ensures that student learning is enhanced by working on modern machines, and also ensures that we are able to support a more stable and safer campus computing environment, since we will remain compatible with all of the most recent software, fixes, and security patches.
Did you know that a campus-wide license allows all members of the campus community to use Zoom, one of the best web conferencing tools around? Everyday people around campus are using Zoom to connect with colleagues and teams, teach at a distance, for online office hours, bring guest lecturers into the classroom, and interview prospective employees. Let us help you get started with Zoom today.
Students today expect mobility when using technology. Our campus provides a secure and reliable wireless infrastructure second to none. Students are able to access campus and internet resources anywhere on campus at any time.
The CSU is dedicated to keeping the network infrastructure of each campus current. Over the summer and fall CSUSM will work with AT&T and the Chancellor’s Office to replace obsolete network equipment. This will increase our campus network bandwidth and capacity, and make our network infrastructure more reliable.
We believe that students’ attention and efforts should be focused on interactions with their Instructors, classmates, and the subject matter, not the technology. The power of educational technology lies in helping Instructors and students personalize learning, collaborate, make connections, share knowledge or create something entirely new. Our focus is on helping Instructors adopt the high impact practices and technologies that create and support transformational teaching and learning experiences.
Media Production Services (MPS) puts together all of the pieces you need to produce media for the modern online environment. Media production changes as quickly as the internet, so we keep on top of things so you don’t have to. We can help with the whole media workflow from concept to delivery and all the steps in between. Let us know how we can help you.
We are happy to offer all CSUSM students and faculty CougarApps, a technology to provide access to a rich set of software applications previously only offered on campus computers. CougarApps gives you the opportunity to access campus applications and your files from anywhere at anytime. Watch the CougarApps highlight video to learn more.
IITS is committed to saving power and making efficient use of our server and desktop computers. Since 2008, we’ve made a focused effort to leverage server virtualization and reduce the number of physical servers in our datacenter. Today, more than 208 of our servers (over 70% of our total install base) run in an energy-efficient virtual environment. On the desktop front, we operate a campus-wide advanced power-management solution on all campus PCs that intelligently reduces the power consumption of idle computers
These days everyone is concerned about computer and internet security, with attacks on our computer systems and the potential for theft of private data and our very identities. Cal State San Marcos takes security very seriously and has implemented a number of programs to ensure that private data stays private.
CALM aims to aid faculty in replacing costly textbooks with lower cost alternatives by using high-quality open educational resources (OER), library resources, digital or customized textbooks, and/or faculty-authored materials. In the first year of CALM, 30 participating faculty have saved our students over $413,000.
In addition to state-of-the-art classrooms, many learning spaces on campus include computer labs equipped with the latest computers, printers, and high-speed networking. These systems are integrated with conveniences such as a portable home directory that can be accessed anywhere on campus, allowing a seamless computing experience for a variety of disciplines. A directory of all computer labs on campus shows where each lab is located, and what type of lab it is (PC or Mac).
Box is a user friendly, enterprise-level cloud-based storage, file sharing and collaboration platform, which will eventually replace the existing campus-provided H: drive and department share space.
