Fall 2006
Distance Learning Classrooms in the Works
Work is underway on a new distance learning classroom. When completed, Markstein 104 will be dedicated to distance learning via two-way videoconferencing. The room will be completed toward the end of the Fall semester, undergo testing, and become available for the Spring 2007 semester. Markstein 125 will also have some DL capabilities, with the ability to bring guest lecturers into the classroom environment. For more information on these, please contact Chuck Allen (callen or 4783)
Summer Improvements
As you may have noticed, all of our regularly scheduled classrooms are “smart,” meaning they are equipped with a standard set of gear designed to make presenting different kinds of media in class easy and effective. There are over a hundred rooms, and every year we upgrade and replace equipment in some of these to keep them up to date. This summer brighter projectors were installed in 18 rooms:
- ACD 113, 115, 302, 306, 308, 310, 315, 317, 319
- COM 206
- FCB 108
- UH 100, 270, 271, 441, 443, 444, 439
Instructor’s station furniture will be replaced in another 16 rooms sometime before the end of the year:
- ACD 201, 205, 211, 315, 405, 407
- UH 101, 237, 257, 271, 273, 370, 371, 373, 442, 460
Three physics labs in Science 2 have been made “smart”: 245, 249, and 251.
Document Cameras
Document cameras are installed in some rooms. These are a digital replacement for the old overhead projector, as well as being able to display opaque items, and being integrated in the rooms’ smart systems.

Some of these are deployed in drawers in the instructor's station and swing up as seen above (Kel 2303, 3400, 5102 and all Markstein classrooms).
Others are ceiling mounted looking down. This type can be seen below along with it's mounting hardware (Sci2-245, 251).

Closed Captioning
![]() |
Closed caption devices (CCD) that display subtitled text from tapes and DVD are not standard on all classroom projectors at this point, although we are working on it. Right now some rooms have CCD's permanently installed, and in others we deploy CCD’s to classrooms on request. Closed-captioning can be turned on and off in those rooms equipped with our OnScreen control system. Rooms that are CC-equipped as of Fall 2006 include: ACD308, 315, 317, FCB108, Sci1-207, Sci2-245, 249, 251, UH270, and all Markstein Hall classrooms. |
Spring 2006
Welcome to New Team Members
We are very happy to announce the addition of Doug Goss (dgoss@csusm.edu, 4826) and Jacob Angelo (jangelo@csusm.edu, 8677) to the CTS team. Please contact them for any classroom technology requirements. To see what they look like, please go to our home page: http://www.csusm.edu/iits/cts/.
Will White working in new production facility
Will White has been assigned to coordinate the operations of the new CSUSM Production Facility, with video and audio production areas in the Kellogg Library and field production equipment for checkout. For more information, visit our website (http://www.csusm.edu/production/).
Markstein Hall
We expect to have all 27 smart classrooms completed by February 3rd, including the new 120-seat lecture hall, room 125. Room 125 is operational, but will be further enhanced next summer.
Lighting in Arts 240 and ACD 102
ACD102 has been reprogrammed to allow separate dimming of the board, presentation area, and audience. This will allow greater flexibility for teaching using the data/video projector. If you need training on how to use the controls, please let us know. Arts 240 has had some electrical problems that are being worked on. Thanks for your patience.
Checkout equipment
More media checkout equipment is becoming available this semester for students to use to complete project requiring field video and audio production. For a complete list of available items and policies, please go to:
