Smart classroom" can mean many things to many people, and definitions will
continue to evolve as technology changes. CTS listens to instructors and
students and tries to provide the classroom technology that helps people the
most. Currently all classrooms over 20 person capacity are smart, as well as
many conference rooms. To ease understanding, we have classified the rooms as follows:
Technology Level 1 = Little or no media technology in classroom.
Some rooms are too small to effectively fit equipment into on a permanent basis. Any requirements will have to be met by bringing in portable equipment on a temporary basis. Other rooms (e.g. science labs) specifically omit such equipment.
Technology Level 2 = TV/VCR and overhead projector only.
Some smaller classrooms (below 25 capacity) have the minimal classroom technology complement: television, VCR and an overhead projector.
Technology Level 3 = Semi-smart classroom/no control system.
This level is obsolete. There are no rooms in this category any more.
Technology Level 4= Fully smart classroom technology.
This is the standard modern smart room, including: TV, DVD player, VCR, audio system, data/video projector, and computer. All devices can be controlled from a single instructor's station. These rooms also support laptops, and the connection of other external devices such as camcorders or cassette decks.
Some examples: Crestron, Extron MediaLink, SP Controls, OnScreen.
Technology Level 4+ = Fully smart classroom technology plus some extras.
Some rooms are large and are used for special events as well as teaching. These rooms offer special challenges for the instructor because of their size and we have tried to address these with superior technology - chiefly more sophisticated control systems, speech amplification, and special lighting controls, and sometimes more than one data/video projection system.
