Frequently Asked Questions
About this Service
Who is eligible?
Anyone associated with education or is a member of
the CSUSM Alumni Association. You will be asked to
describe your affiliation and provide a photocopy
of your current ID card, registration, or paycheck
stub. It you are no longer a teacher or student, you
should go to a commercial provider for access.
How much does access cost?
For students/faculty/staff at local educational facilities
the cost is $80 per year. For members of the CSUSM
Alumni Association, the cost is $70 per year. One
year begins from the date the contract is processed.
What does the annual fee include?
The cost includes an email address. You will also
receive 2 MB of space on our server.
How much user support will
you get?
We have to imagine a line somewhere between your modem
and our modem. If there is something wrong with our
installation tools, we'll fix that and help you through
the installation. If there is something wrong with
your computer and/or it's configuration we can't help
you. If you are very new to the Internet and/or Unix,
you should get some training material; we can't always
help people who are looking for general information
on how to use the system. Our dialup support staff
can be reached by dialing (760) 750-4784 or via the
email at dialup@csusm.edu.
What about the Shareware tools?
The shareware/freeware applications are also very
good. They aren't supported by us but are in wide
use around the world. We'll preconfigure them for
connecting to us but that's the extent of it. Some
of them are shareware and you need to pay the developers
if you are going to use the product. This is a good
option for people who are comfortable with their computers
and the tools used to interface with us. You can replace
your applications with new or different things as
time goes along. Some of the things you'll probably
like to have will have to be downloaded from our ftp
server because we don't have the right to distribute
them on disk. Free/shareware applications include
Trumpet Winsock or MacPPP for the actual connection,
WinVN or InterNews for news, Wingopher or TurboGopher
and Eudora for mail.
Will you have to pay local
toll charges?
We recently updated our system to include additional
phone numbers so that our guests can avoid local toll
charges. You can find the numbers here.
How do you sign up?
You can call (760) 750-4716 or email edial@csusm.edu
and give your name and address and how you are eligible
and you should receive a contract in the mail shortly.
You can also download and print a contract but you
must mail the original contract back to us.
