Language Other Than English Requirement
CSUSM believes strongly in preparing its students for the demands of a diverse and globalizing world. So, every student — regardless of major and before graduation — must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English.
The LOTER is a graduation requirement for all students. Meeting it confirms that you have reached an intermediate level of linguistic and cultural proficiency in a second language. It does not require fluency.
There are various ways to meet the LOTER. We hope these choices make meeting the requirement simple and rewarding.
To prevent a delay in graduating, do not wait until junior or senior year!
“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 16 through September 22, 2012, as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week. I call on public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that acknowledge the tremendous contributions these institutions and their graduates have made to our country.”
