Biography: Steve AstephenSteve Astephen joined Wasserman Media Group as a President of the Action Sports and Olympics division in 2003, as part of Wasserman’s acquisition of Astephen’s prominent action sports company, The Familie. Representing the category’s top athletes, endorsement deals, consulting, creative, event activation and sales, Wasserman is now recognized as the leading action sports/lifestyle company in the fields of BMX, motocross, snowboarding, rallycross racing, skateboarding, surfing, road racing and wakeboarding with capabilities in consulting, sponsorship sales, creative execution, social media and event activation.
In 1998, Astephen founded The Familie and began by representing a handful of snowboarders. His success quickly grew to a roster of over 30 of the world’s top action sports athletes in BMX, motocross, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing and wakeboarding. By 1999, The Familie was established as the premiere action sports marketing and athlete management agency with services that included marketing, public relations, creative, licensing, trend research, event activation and consulting. Clients included ESPN X Games, Disney, Stat Card, Powerade, Nike ACG, Jakks Pacific, Nestle, DonJoy and Campbell’s Soup among others. In 2003, The Familie acquired Action Sports Management, creating one of the largest action sports firms in the world with more than 50 athletes competing in seven sports.
Prior to forming The Familie, Astephen worked with Lamar Snowboards where he developed a licensing deal with Nintendo for the first-ever snowboarding video game. During this time, Astephen assembled one of the world’s top snowboarding teams, producing champions of the X Games and several other major events. Astephen also served as director of sales and marketing for Mantra Sunglasses, where he was integral to the brand’s U.S. launch, and as a consultant for Sungold Eyewear.
Astephen began his professional career in 1988 at Vail Associates where he was instrumental in the mountain resort’s retail business. He later opened The Other Side, the first snow and skate retail store in Beaver Creek, Colorado, which became one of the most influential shops among top snowboarders. Astephen currently sits on many Boards and advises companies like MOVMT Shoes and San Diego Sport Innovators (SDSI) to name a couple.
