Media Delivery

The last and most important step in producing media is getting it to its intended audience. Luckily we live in the age of the internet, which provides some great ways of getting your content where it needs to go. Video-On-Demand (VOD) is one of the most popular ways of delivering video to the web. It means just what the name implies. Every time you click on a media link, you are starting an on-demand stream from our servers to your computer, in the same way you watch Netflix or Amazon Prime at home. We can help you get your files into the right formats for many different audiences, and create links you can use online or embed video in your pages.

Mediasite

Most instructional media content at CSUSM is delivered by our Mediasite system. Mediasite is a media delivery hub that allows efficient delivery of video and audio content to pretty much any modern device - like our own private YouTube. Note the word "private". Access control using campus credentials means that only the students in a particular section can view content during the course, protecting your content and allowing us to use copyrighted content under Fair Use.

YouTube

Everyone knows about YouTube. It is what we in the business call a CDN or Content Delivery Network. That means you upload media into it and it does all of the heavy-lifting to get it to your audience. And it's free! We do have campus YouTube accounts, or you can easily create your own. So why use YouTube at all when we have our own fantastic campus Mediasite system that pretty much does the same kind of thing?

Advantages

  • Most common type of media delivery on the web;
  • Free.

Disadvantages

  • Basic account only allows media length up to 15 minutes - this can be overcome.
  • Limited security settings.
  • If you use copyrighted music in your video, they will notice and may take down or put ads on it.

Let us know and we'll be happy to assist you in using YouTube or any other social-media-related online tools for media delivery.

Vimeo

We also sometimes use Vimeo to deliver work-in-progress videos for client approval. It's like YouTube, but has the advantage of quicker upload and processing so we can share project files more quickly.
