Appointment of Interim Associate Dean, CEHHS
Dr. Denise Garcia, professor of biology, has agreed to serve as interim associate dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Services beginning in January. Dr. Garcia came to CSUSM in 1996 and was promoted to full professor in 2005. Dr. Garcia comes to us with strong administrative, grant writing, and curriculum experience and is a tireless advocate for ensuring student success. Throughout her career she has been committed to helping students develop strong academic records in preparation for graduate school and has developed a robust research program that incorporates both undergraduate and graduate students.
From 2005 to 2010, she was chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, a large and complex department with a significant budget. The Biology Department also serves nursing, kinesiology and human development. During the period that the nursing program was under development, Dr. Garcia participated in several committees to develop courses to be offered by the biology department for nursing students. She has also served on several PRCs for nursing faculty.
Dr. Garcia is currently the assistant director of the NIH Bridges to the Future grant and will serve as director in 2013. She has established and maintains close ties with faculty at Palomar and MiraCosta Colleges, and this grant funds ten students from each institution to participate in activities that encourage them to major in the STEM disciplines.
