An agreement to provide guaranteed admission for Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) students to California State University San Marcos is now official. CSUSM President Dr. Karen Haynes and OUSD Superintendent Larry Perondi inked the Memorandum of Understanding that outlines the compact during Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting.
The MOU sets a structured roadmap to college success for Oceanside’s students. It promises that all graduating seniors, from the class of 2017 and beyond, will receive guaranteed admission to CSUSM if they meet California State University (CSU) course and GPA requirements. Not only does this MOU guarantee admission to CSUSM but it helps students become college-ready, eligible to apply to any of the CSU system’s 22 other campuses.
This is the eighth MOU that CSUSM has signed with organizations and institutions within the region since 2006. The university has similar agreements with the San Marcos Unified School District, the Escondido Union High School District, the Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District, San Pasqual Academy, the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services Agency, the San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency, and Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel. The university will sign its ninth MOU in September with the Temecula Valley Unified School District.
“Cal State San Marcos is a community-engaged institution of higher education committed to helping our region’s youth succeed,” said Haynes. “When our students know what’s expected of them and what’s guaranteed for meeting these expectations, the entire region is certain to share in their triumph.”
“Signing an agreement with a university such as CSUSM, growing in stature the way it is— this is money in the bank for our kids,” said Superintendent Perondi. “This is truly a huge milestone for OUSD.”
