20th Anniversary Event Kicks off Year Long Celebration

20th Anniversary Kickoff

City of San Marcos Vice Mayor Hal Martin presents President Karen Haynes with a proclamation declaring January 28, 2010, CSUSM Day in the city.

On January 28, the California State University San Marcos community came together for the 20th Anniversary Kickoff, a celebratory pep rally in honor of the historic campus milestone. It is the first event of many scheduled throughout the year.

Hundreds of students, faculty, and staff flocked to Craven Circle to take part in the festivities. Local radio station 91X provided the entertainment for the event, playing music and giving away free prizes. CSUSM Parking and Commuter Services held a raffle, giving away free parking passes to two lucky students. Pizza and snacks were generously distributed to those in attendance, compliments of Campus Catering.

Adding to the excitement was also a giveaway of a limited edition T-shirt, featuring the 20th anniversary photo, to the first 500 attendees and a 20-inch poster awarded to the first 1,000. The atmosphere provided a positive setting for students to socialize with one another, meet with old friends, and make new ones.

President Karen Haynes remarked at the event, "In the two short decades since your University opened its doors, we have established ourselves as a progressive 21st century campus with a commitment to providing broad access to quality instruction while partnering with our community to meet the needs of our growing region. Without a doubt, Cal State San Marcos has evolved into a campus with a pioneering can-do spirit.  And we are committed to building on our role as a driver of cultural, social, and economic development in the region."

City of San Marcos Vice Mayor Hal Martin proclaimed January 28, 2010, as Cal State San Marcos Day in the city, and representatives from Turner Construction were on hand to announce their support of this year's Annual Fund Campaign. Turner will match, dollar for dollar, every gift made in support of the fund in 2010, up to $10,000.

The event program concluded with officers from the University Police Department hoisting the new CSUSM 20th Anniversary flag up the flagpole.

The endearing camaraderie and school spirit at the event demonstrated the great strides and accomplishments that the campus has made since its inception 20 years ago.
