Dr. Merryl Goldberg, professor of visual and performing arts, receives the 2014 "President’s Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching Innovation and Excellence."
Even in her 20 years at Cal State San Marcos, Dr. Goldberg continues to demonstrate an intense passion for her work and great enthusiasm for teaching. She says that each semester she “falls in love with our students and their potential.”
Dr. Goldberg helps students realize their potential through innovative pedagogy that intertwines research with experiential learning and class lessons. For instance, she may use art prints to demonstrate how they can be used to teach math concepts, or she may show how to use dance as a means to teach science.
Dr. Goldberg’s contributions to learning and to the University extend beyond the campus. Dr. Goldberg founded Center ARTES at CSUSM, bringing together the San Diego Office of Education, the California Center for the Arts and local schools to promote education through art. She also works with educators around the region to develop unique arts-centered teaching methods that stretch the creativity of students and teachers alike. In fact, much of Dr. Goldberg’s work focuses as much on helping students learn as it does on helping teachers teach.
