Dr. Betsy Read, professor of biological sciences and director of the Professional Science Master’s in Biotechnology Program, receives the 2014 "President’s Outstanding Faculty Award for Scholarship and Creative Activity."
According to her colleagues, Dr. Read is a dynamo and a highly respected scientist who is committed to her profession and to the intellectual engagement and development of her students and faculty. She views research and teaching as equally important, wanting her students to experience the same thrill of discovery and creativity that she does in her own research.
Dr. Read’s research has resulted in a one-of-its-kind study. After nearly a decade of collaborative work and two years of writing, Dr. Read and her colleagues published the genome sequence of E. huxleyi, the third most abundant species of phytoplankton in the ocean. Her project is the first ever to document a pan genome across 14 different strains.
Dr. Read’s work with her students is no less impressive. Since coming to CSUSM in 1993, she has mentored more than 100 research students, provided expert oversight of the semester-in-residence projects of nearly two dozen Professional Science Masters students, and has encouraged her students to publish manuscripts and present at significant conferences.
