CSUSM's Visual and Performing Arts Department is pleased to present Seussical the Musical™, featuring music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.

“Seussical offers a great family musical for our community, based on the works of Dr. Seuss, a famous local resident,” said Director Kaja Dunn. “Our cast also reflects our unique and diverse student body—we have veterans, former foster youth and students from many foreign countries including Columbia, Sweden and Mexico. In total, our cast represents nine different majors across the University!”

This production is CSUSM’s first large-scale musical.

“This represents an exciting point of growth for the theatre department,” said Dunn.

Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, Seussical features the mischievous Cat in the Hat and a cast of beloved Dr. Seuss characters as they bring more than 20 of the author's classic tales to life.

Olivia Battle, a visual and performing arts major, plays Gertrude McFuzz, a good-hearted bird who is too afraid to approach her crush, Horton, for fear of not being noticed.

“She’s harebrained, awkward and self-centered,” reflected Battle. “She thinks that if she can change her appearance that she will catch his attention; but in the end it’s not her looks that count but her friendship.”

Battle, a former foster youth, is passionate about acting and loves the art of bringing a character to life for an audience. After graduation she looks forward to moving to Los Angeles or New York to pursue acting.

“I’m passionate about acting and telling stories,” she said. “And I love the family dynamic of working on a production like this. We are a close-knit group and we have had a lot of fun during rehearsals.”

“This is truly a production that will appeal to all ages,” said CSUSM student Tatiana Saunders, a senior double majoring in visual and performing arts and communication, who serves as the assistant stage manager, helping to ensure the smooth execution of the performances.  Prior to enrolling at Cal State San Marcos, Saunders served in the army as a gunner and truck driver who fought in combat in Iraq. Now the mother of one, Tatiana works full-time as a hotel manager while pursuing her dream of one day owning her own theatre.

“Seussical is about individuality; finding out who you are and being okay with that,” said Saunders. “And it’s a deep and amazing love story that encourages the audience to embrace their imagination.”
