Public Health Nursing Certificate Instructions

For our CSU San Marcos
Traditional BSN, LVN to BSN, or Accelerated BSN Graduates ONLY

Different instructions apply if you are a CSU San Marcos RN BSN Graduate (see below).

Students are encouraged to apply for their California Public Health Nurse Certificate just as soon as you have graduated with your BSN degree and have received your RN license.  This is a lifetime certificate and you will be eligible to apply for this certificate just as soon as you have received your permanent RN license number.

Students will be completing the Public Health Nurse Certificate application process on their own after they have graduated with their BSN degree. 

Students do NOT need any paperwork signed by a faculty member or any staff member in the School of Nursing, or any staff member in the University Office of Registration and Records, in order to complete this application process.  The School of Nursing has already sent documentation to the BRN of the Nursing coursework for all graduates that fulfills the education and training required for this certificate.  You do NOT need to request an additonal transcript from CSUSM for the BRN.

If you are a CSUSM RN BSN Graduate then you will need to request a copy of your official CSUSM transcript.  Complete the form at the following link and submit it to Extended Learning:  http://www.csusm.edu/enroll/allforms/TranscriptRequest.pdf  After Extended Learning receives this request from you, an advisor will hand carry it ot the Registrar's Office to get expedited.  Once the advisor has your official hard copy transcript, s/he will mail your transcript to the BRN.

Instructions:

  1. Student obtains the Public Health Nursing Certificate Application and instructions from the BRN Web site. http://www.rn.ca.gov/applicants/ad-pract.shtml#phn
  2. Student completes the application form and returns it to the BRN with appropriate application fee payment.
    In the section of the application that asks for you to give the Name and Address of the school where you completed your Public Health Nursing Education, enter "Same as Above", since you already entered CSU San Marcos and address for your Baccalaureate or Masters degree. 

    In the section of the application that asks for 'Verification of Child Abuse/Neglect Training', enter 'CSU San Marcos' for the CE Provider/School Name.  Under Course Name and Number, write in 'BSN Degree', and leave the number of hours blank.
  3. Because you are a CSUSM BSN graduate, we have already sent your official transcript and paperwork from our University Office of Registration and Records to the BRN verifying your BSN degree here.
    YOU DO NOT NEED to send any further paperwork to the BRN other than your Public Health Nursing Certificate Application and payment. 
  4. Student will hear back directly from the BRN with the Certificate.
