Carlsbad Educational Foundation

Patty Johnson
760-929-1555
patty@carlsbaded.org

www.carlsbaded.org

As a stand-alone 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1983 to provide private support for high-quality public educational programs within the Carlsbad Unified School District, the Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF) offers a variety of supervised opportunities for college interns to learn, get involved, and help give back to the local educational community.  A brief sketch of four such opportunities is provided below:

1.    Kids’ Care Childcare & Enrichment Program

Founded in 1990, CEF offers high-quality, state-licensed childcare and enrichment to nearly 700 elementary school children across 9 Carlsbad elementary school locations.  Taking place Monday – Friday from 7 am to 6:30 pm, this before- and after-school program is a direct service program to our community, serving students ages 5 – 11, through classroom-based activities.

Internship opportunities include work at both the central CEF office with the Director of Kids’ Care as well as at several of the 9 sites with Site Directors, teachers, and students.  Interns will assist with both administrative and direct service work including program observation, evaluation, program design (e.g. Homework Club, enrichment, etc.), exposure to state licensing rules, limited database projects, and shadowing opportunities.  Interest in education, administration, and/or child development is a plus.

CEF will accept 1-2 interns for this program.

2.    Carlsbad Educational Foundation’s Special Events Internship

Interns in this position will work directly with CEF’s Director of Development and will gain hands-on experience in planning, executing, and evaluating special event fundraisers in the non-profit community.  With three signature events taking place in October, December, and April/May, students will be exposed to a variety of classic event management opportunities including community outreach, donor solicitation, silent auctions, communication with schools, database management, onsite event logistics, volunteer management, and event marketing.  Projects will take place in the central CEF office, out in the community (when appropriate), and at the event location (including The Crossings, La Costa Resort, and LEGOLAND California).

CEF will accept 1-2 interns for this program.

3.    Carlsbad Educational Foundation’s Development Office Internship

Interns in this position will work directly with CEF’s Director of Development and will learn the ropes of development/fundraising work as part of our year-round efforts to diversify revenues from a variety of sources including corporations, foundations, and individuals.  Development office interns will learn many of the basics about non-profit fundraising which are highly transferable across the sector.  Students will assist with prospect research, data mining, donor correspondence, review and refinement of an annual fundraising plan, volunteer management and job descriptions, community training opportunities, and job-shadowing.

CEF will accept 1-2 interns for this program.

4.    Program Research, Design, and Evaluation

Interns in this position will work directly with the CEO of the Carlsbad Educational Foundation by helping to research, design, and evaluate key programs impacting K-12 students.  “Programs” will include both grant-funded initiatives which impact science, music, and innovation amongst public school students along with direct service programs like half-day enrichment, high school Summer Academy, and online classes.  In all cases, the common thread of conducting an environmental scan of related initiatives, helping to structure program logistics in a way which makes them simple to access and use, program design, implementation, and effective evaluation to understand impact and improve future offerings will be core areas for involvement.

CEF will accept 1-2 interns for this program.

Tutor youth to improve reading, spelling and math. These matches are monitored for progress, and you will receive tutoring training.

Tutor Information: Tutors would spend about 1 ½ a week in at the school site reading individually with kids from 1st to 3rd grade during their class time. This would be semester based.
Each week, volunteers spend approximately one hour working with a team of four students for 15 minutes each. Those same four students read three to four days a week for four different tutors who form a team. The tutors communicate with each other by tracking books read and commenting on student progress.
Best of all students enjoy the special attention they are receiving from their dedicated tutors. Likewise, our tutors value the friendships they form with the children because they know that they are making a positive difference in the children's lives.
To become a tutor you should
