Report to the Chancellor's continued...

The Jan. 13 2010 Town Hall, held on the CSUSM campus,  was planned by Director of Development for New Haven Youth and Family Services,  Bill Kincaid, along with OCSL staff Darci Strother, Val Knox, and four students  who were selected from the student body at California State University San Marcos.  The students were chosen through a highly competitive application and interview process.

The purpose of the Nov. 5 2009 Town Hall was to gather together representative leaders of community organizations, and to engage in a planning dialogue to best structure a large-scale event that would produce the best possible outcomes.  The OCSL staff sought input to know which one or two focus areas were of most interest  and relevance to our local community.  The community partners told us clearly that all five focus areas were relevant, and that all should be addressed at the Jan. 13 and Jan. 20 Town Halls.

Please note:
For the purposes of the remainder of this report, the information provided will refer primarily to the Jan. 13 2010 Town Hall held at CSUSM.  In a separate appendix, we provide the materials given to participants and panelists at the Jan. 20 2010 Town Hall meeting.

The Jan. 13 2010 Town Hall was conducted in three main modules.  Module one involved breakout group work based on the five different areas of focus.  Module two brought the group back together to report on their work and to discuss the issues in a large town meeting format.  The third module gave the group a chance to network with each other and report back on what connections they made and how they plan on moving forward with the ideas they came up with during the meeting.  Please see the attached schedule for more information.

The meeting was co-facilitated by Kincaid and Strother, with most of the discussion being between the community members.  Participants were invited through e-mail and phone calls.  Participants were provided with the attached brochure filled with information and were encouraged to view boards around the space filled with facts and information on each topic.  After the town hall meeting, the participants where provided with access to all of the information collected during the meeting including photos and a video from the event on the website that was created to present the outcomes of the meeting.
