Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program
Welcome to the RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) Program at CSU San Marcos. The program is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIH/NIGMS). The RISE Program is intended to prepare talented and motivated minority undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the sciences to enter and succeed in doctoral studies (Ph.D. or M.D. /Ph.D.).
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a full time student at CSU San Marcos
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Junior or Senior Standing
- Commitment to pursuing a Ph.D. in a biomedical research field
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Be an under-represented minority in the sciences (African American, Native American, Hispanic, Filipino, Pacific Islander)
- Be a science major in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or Psychology
Program Requirements
- Work in a research laboratory 12-15 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week in the summer
- Attend Biomedical Seminars (Thursdays at 4:00pm).
- Participate in the OTRES Summer Research Training Program
- Participate in the Puentes Program (Graduate School Prep Program)
- Attend Scientific meetings to present your research
- Participate in all OTRES activities
- Mentor Undergraduate OTRES Students
Undergraduate Students Benefits
- Stipend of about $8,000 per year (monthly stipend of $600)
- Obtain "hands-on" research experience in research laboratories at CSU San Marcos
- Travel and conference expenses for 1 conference per year
- Mentoring by program faculty and staff
- Networking opportunities
- Academic Advising and Priority Registration
Graduate Students Benefits
- Stipend of $15,000 per year
- Obtain "hands-on" research experience in research laboratories at CSU San Marcos

- Partial support for tuition (subject to NIH funding limits and after all other scholarships and/or grants have been applied)
