Historical Progress Reports/Photos

The Field House / University Student Union is a 34,355 square foot, one story structure with capacity to serve 900 individuals for sports and student activity functions for Cal State San Marcos.

The building is planned as the initial phase of the future physical education complex for the campus. The primary corridor will serve as reception and sports facilities check-in, a casual lounge area, and will provide display and recognition opportunities for Cal State San Marcos. High clerestory windows will provide natural light along the length of the corridor/lounge.

The location of the structure allows for maximum future expansion potential. The building is designed as a series of “modules” located along central corridor spines that can be extended to allow for the addition of future building “modules”. The M. Gordon Clarke Field House will serve as a stand-alone facility, yet will readily accommodate growth as the needs of Cal State San Marcos change.

The building features five functional areas that will provide a significant amount of gathering space for students, faculty and staff.

  •  Office Suite with closed and open offices and workroom. A convenience store with a separate outside entrance will allow students and staff to purchase drinks and snacks.

  • Conference Center comprised of four conference rooms of varying sizes, a prefunction corridor, kitchen, and storage for chairs and tables. Each of the conference rooms will have access to an outside, trellis and vine covered patio for breaks.

  • Aerobics/Multi-Purpose Room with a high ceiling and wood floor for aerobics, martial arts, movement classes, and recreational volleyball and ˝ court basketball. This room will have high clerestory windows for natural light, and glass openings along the corridor for casual viewing of the activities by passers by.

  • Weight Room with weight machines and free weights, The quarter-circle shape of this room takes advantage of the views from the elevated site. A vine-covered trellis will shade the curved wall, and will continue around to define the edge of an outdoor patio.

  • Locker/Shower Rooms, sports medicine, equipment storage and checkout. Men’s and women’s rooms will have approximately 134 lockers, nine showers, and restroom facilities. Obscure glass at high clerestory windows will allow natural light into the locker rooms.
