Community Alert Bulletin
Shortly after midnight this
morning, a woman was shot while driving south on Twin Oaks
Valley Road, just south of campus. The suspects fled after
the shooting, making a u-turn and travelling north on Twin
Oaks Valley Road past the campus.
The Sheriff’s Department is
handling the incident. Our University Police Department has
not been involved, other than being on the lookout for the
suspect’s vehicle--a dark colored, lifted, full-sized, Chevy
pickup.
The woman was transported to
Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were not
life threatening and she was released a short time later.
This investigation is on-going.
Anyone with information related to this incident should
contact University Police at 760-750-4567 or the detectives

Community Alert Bulletin
Thanks to an alert student, three men who were creating a
disturbance in Founders Plaza were reported to University
Police on February 6, 2008. University Police responded, and
one of the suspects was arrested for possession of
marijuana, and the other suspects were also identified. All
three were non- students and had no affiliation with the
university.
University Police continued the investigation and provided
information to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. In
the early morning hours of February 22, 2008, the Sheriff’s
Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT), along with Sheriff’s
Deputies, California State Parole Agents, and University
Police Officers served a search warrant at the Prominence
Apartments, which culminated in a felony arrest of a “high
risk” parolee with gang affiliations.
This
incident underscores the importance of everyone on campus
being vigilant and reporting suspicious activity to our
University Police. We encourage everyone to program
750-4567 into your cell phones so you can reach our dispatch
directly to report suspicious persons and keep our campus
safe.

Mountain Lion
Sighted On Campus
There has been sightings of a
mountain lion on campus in the evenings and early
morning hours. Please use caution when walking on campus
at night, and do not walk alone.

If you see a mountain lion, contact
University Police immediately. For the fastest possible
police response, program 750-4567 into your cell
phone.
If you are confronted by a mountain
lion, DO NOT RUN, as this will stimulate
their instinct to chase. Make yourself appear as large
as possible, keep intense eye contact, wave your arms,
and make noise.

Safety Update
Your police department is
dedicated to ensuring the safety of our campus community.
The following information is provided to address the unlikely
possibility of a dangerous incident occurring at our campus.
-
Cal State San Marcos has an
emergency operations center on campus, managed by a full
time emergency management coordinator. There is also an
emergency plan in place for our campus.
-
Cal State San Marcos is served
by a fully certified police department, operating 24 hours
per day, and 365 days a year. The police department is
dedicated exclusively to serving this campus community, and
thus has a very fast response time to emergency calls.
-
The police department has fully
trained and certified emergency dispatchers on duty 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year, to handle requests for service.
Please program 760-750-4567 into your cell phones to
reach us directly in an emergency.
-
Our officers have been trained
in “active shooter” scenarios. This type of training was put
in place after the Columbine tragedy, and changed the
paradigm for police response to armed persons at a campus.
This training is designed to isolate the shooter from as
many victims as possible, and for the police to immediately
seek out and engage the shooter, with the intent to stop the
action.
-
At Cal State San Marcos, we have
the ability to “lock down” buildings remotely from the
police department. This will be done immediately in an
active shooter scenario.
-
We also have a public address
system to communicate the latest information to persons
inside our buildings and classrooms. Should this situation
occur, you will be advised to stay in your classroom, lock
and secure doors and windows, and stay low and out of view.
-
DO NOT PULL FIRE ALARMS. This
could cause persons to leave a place of safety and go into
an unprotected area.
-
As a result of the horrific
incident at VA Tech, Emergency Management personnel will be
meeting to review our procedures. In addition, the police
department will be conducting refresher training for active
shooter the week after graduation.
-
It is important that all members
of our campus community be alert to any behaviors that you
feel could possibly lead to violence, and notify police
immediately.
-
Notify the police department
immediately if you ever receive information about the
possibility of a weapon being brought onto our campus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to provide confidential information for
the police and remain anonymous, call 760-750-TIPS
(760-750-8477) and leave your message.
