College police train for campus attack

SAN MARCOS ---- Simulated gunshots echoed across the campus of Cal State San Marcos on Thursday afternoon as university police officers received special "active shooter" training so they will be prepared if a gunman ever opens fire on campus.

With their guns drawn, teams of officers from the university, Palomar College and MiraCosta College were coached to confront a shooter by stacking themselves in a thin line and then sweeping around the corners of buildings and classrooms.

San Marcos Cub Scout Den Visits University Police

San Marcos Cub Scout Station Visit Pic

The CSUSM Police Department hosted Cub Scout Den #5 from San Marcos on March 31st.  The department was contacted by the den leaders Cindy Accurso and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Santos who wanted to acquaint the cub scouts with university law enforcement.  Sergeant Jesus Flores and Officer Panza presented the scouts with a fun and informative tour of the campus police department.  The scouts had hands-on exposure to the art of fingerprinting.  Additionally, all got to pile into the police cruiser.  At the end of the tour many of the scouts voiced their desire to enter into a law enforcement career.

The university police department encourages the campus community to visit the department and to become familiar with the services the department provides the community.  The department provides “ride-alongs” to anyone interested in being with an officer on duty.

To sign up for a visit or “ride-along” please send your email to Sgt. Jesus Flores at jflores@csusm.edu or call (760) 750-4567.

Paramedics credit Officer Fanucchi’s action with saving the victims life

Officer Fanucchi and Family Pic

On January 22, 2007, University Police and San Marcos paramedics were called to a medical aid call in Markstein Hall, on the campus of California State University San Marcos.  When Officer Angela Fanucchi arrived at the scene, she observed one student down and unresponsive, with another student performing rescue breathing for the victim.

Officer Fanucchi did an assessment on the victim, and after finding no pulse, immediately began CPR.  The student began breathing and a faint pulse was detected.  Paramedics arrived approximately four minutes after Officer Fanucchi and transported the victim to Palomar Hospital.  The victim subsequently recovered and was released from the hospital.

Paramedics credit Officer Fanucchi’s action with saving the victims life.

Officer Fanucchi was nominated for a Lifesaving Award by her Patrol Commander, Lieutenant Douglass Miller, and her Watch Commander, Sergeant Jesse Flores.  On February 28, 2007, Officer Fanucchi was presented the Lifesaving Award by the Chief of Police.

Officer Fanucchi’s actions were in the finest tradition of the Cal State San Marcos Police Department.  She is pictured with her award, along with her husband and her parents.
