2012-2013 Zomalt Outstanding Service Award Winner
Upon the recommendation of the Executive Council, I am pleased to announce that Sally-Jo Divis in the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is the 2012-2013 Ernest and Leslie Zomalt Outstanding Service Award honoree. For the past 22 years, Ms. Divis has been a strong advocate for students in the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, encouraging everyone in the department to find new applications for their work. She works tirelessly to ensure that students, faculty and staff work in concert and that all ideas are respected. Her efforts have increased morale and camaraderie and led to improvements throughout the departments, especially in terms of safety and access for disabled students.
In her role on the University Safety Committee, Ms. Divis advises Risk Management on potential safety and disability issues. She worked with Facility Services to install a fume hood at the proper height for wheelchair use. For a blind student, she drew on her connections with technicians on other campuses as well as published guidelines from the American Chemical Society to work with faculty and the student on a beneficial lesson plan.
Ms. Divis’ resources and experience have made her a valuable source of information, and she inspires all those around her. “Sally pushes us to be innovative and to think of new ways to approach research and instruction problems. She always nudges gently enough for us not to even realize what a catalyst she is in our development as faculty,” said Dr. Jackie Trischman.
Ms. Divis truly embodies the University First spirit, continuously going above and beyond for students, faculty, and the entire science department. Please join me in congratulating her on being named the 2012-2013 Ernest and Leslie Zomalt Outstanding Service Award honoree. I look forward to seeing you on January 17 at 11:00 a.m. where we’ll recognize Ms. Divis and all of the Annual Faculty and Staff Award recipients.
