CRU
Critical Response Unit

The mission statement for each CRU is to
prevent and mitigate the effects of civil disorder and natural disasters and executive
protection. The CRU was organized to assist fellow campuses with additional personnel who
are specifically trained as a unit to respond to the above situations. The CRU is
comprised of university police officers who are sensitive to and understand the problems
and dynamics of an academic institution. The CRU lessens the need to use municipal law
enforcement who may not have a vested interest in the university community.
The CRU has had several "call-outs" in recent
years. In January 1994, the North CRU responded to the CSU Northridge earthquake and aided
the campus and police department for 9 days. For 3 days in May the North CRU and a squad
of South CRU assisted San Francisco State with student demonstrations involving a
controversial mural of Malcolm X. Then the South CRU continued to assist the campus for 3
days to prevent disruption of the Honor Convocation and the Commencement. On September 25,
1996 the South CRU assisted CSU Northridge with a David Duke debate on Proposition 209.
Fifteen officers responded and provided perimeter security to the event site and internal
security for the controversial speaker. CRU is a highly sought position by University
Police officers CRU members are highly trained specialized officers.
Our department point of contact for CRU is Sgt. Flores and
