Graduate Dean's Award

This award acknowledges the importance of the master’s degree at California State University San Marcos by recognizing the accomplishments of an outstanding master’s degree recipient.  Graduate study involves both greater independence and closer intellectual interaction with faculty mentors as the student develops focused knowledge and expertise in a subject area. The recipient of this award will have demonstrated mastery in advanced coursework as well as engagement in independent study and research, scholarship, or creative activity.

Criteria

  • Completion of master’s degree requirements in the current Academic Year.
  • Minimum graduate GPA of 3.5
  • Departmental and/or college recommendation
  • Evidence of outstanding scholarship in graduate coursework
  • Evidence of outstanding achievement on the master’s culminating experience (thesis, project, or comprehensive examination)
  • Achievement in academic, professional, and service activities

Nomination and Award Process

Nominations are submitted by the Graduate Coordinator for the respective Master's Program.  The following supporting materials are to be submitted to the Dean of Graduate Studies (CRA 5210, x 4066) by the deadline (usually the first week of March).

  1. Personal statement written by the student, describing the significance of the student’s educational accomplishments, her/his career goals, and any obstacles that were overcome on the path to the graduate degree (maximum of two pages)
  2. Description of one critical graduate school experience and its impact on the student’s education (written by the student, maximum of one page).
  3. Statement from the student’s faculty advisor, commenting on the significance or special achievement of the student’s culminating experience (thesis, project, or comprehensive examination)
  4. Student’s vita/resumé, including academic, professional, employment, and service history

The name of the student selected by the Dean of Graduate Studies as recipient of the Graduate Dean’s Award will be forwarded to the Vice President for Student Affairs.  The recipient’s name will be forwarded to the President to be considered for the President’s Outstanding Graduate Award.

The Graduate Dean awardee will be honored at a special recognition dinner hosted by the President, scheduled for early May.  Nominating faculty and the Graduate Dean will be invited to attend the recognition dinner to present the award.
