Membership of the Senate

The CSUSM Academic Senate comprises the following:

  • Voting Senators elected by and to represent the eligible voting faculty within each academic unit (totalling 50).
  • A voting Senator elected by and to represent the Lecturer faculty.
  • A voting Senator appointed by the Staff & Administrative Appointments Committee to represent line employees.
  • A voting chair elected by the Senate.
  • A voting vice chair/chair elect elected by the Senate.
  • A voting secretary elected by the Senate.
  • As voting ex officio members, the elected chairs of the Senate's Standing Committees (not including the chair of the Promotion & Tenure Committee).
  • Two voting ex officio members elected to represent CSUSM on the Academic Senate of the California State University.
  • As a non-voting ex officio member, the President of the university.
  • As a non-voting ex officio member, the Provost of the university.
  • As non-voting ex officio members, all vice presidents of the university.
  • As non-voting ex officio members, all associate vice presidents within the division of Academic Affairs.
  • As non-voting ex officio members, all deans within the division of Academic Affairs.
  • As a non-voting ex officio member, the president of the CSUSM chapter of the California Faculty Association.
  • As a non-voting ex officio member, the immediate past chair of the Academic Senate.

For definitions, representation formulas, and other pertinent information, please consult the Constitution and Bylaws of the University Faculty and the Senate Election Rules.  Annual elections are held in the spring.  Special elections may be conducted at any time.  Elections are conducted by the Nominations, Elections, Appointments, and Constitution Committee, a Senate standing committee.
