The benefits of Fraternity & Sorority Life include:

Leadership
Membership in a fraternal organization allows students to expand and develop their leadership potential. Officer positions within each chapter allow students to develop their leadership skills within their own organization. Conferences and travel opportunities are available to develop members as leaders of the Fraternity & Sorority community. Our unified Greek Leadership Council allows men and women from all chapters to come together to advance the entire community. Many members are involved in other campus organizations as well, such as the Orientation Team, Honor Societies, Campus Recreation and many others!

Scholarship
The Fraternity & Sorority experience is designed to motivate and encourage you in your academic pursuits. College classes are challenging and a fraternity or sorority can prove to be a valuable tool in aiding your academic experience at CSU San Marcos. CSUSM Fraternity & Sorority compete for the Academic Cup, a trophy that is awarded to the chapter who has achieved the highest academic standard.

Service
Community service is an essential part of Fraternity & Sorority Life. Individually, chapters perform hands-on volunteer work for the campus and the local community. Chapters also sponsor fundraising activities for charitable organizations, and support a variety of other philanthropic events.

Brotherhood & Sisterhood
Joining a fraternity or sorority is a lifetime commitment. Once you graduate from CSUSM, you will always have your fraternity or sorority - not just the memories and friendships but also the opportunity to stay involved. A sorority or fraternity is not just a college student organization; it is a lifetime membership with connections and privileges that can extend nationally and internationally. For many students, the most important aspect of Fraternity & Sorority Life is the friendships and bonds created throughout their college experience, providing a sense of belonging and a home away from home.

Networking & Alumni Involvement
Fraternal organizations maintain connections with alumni, who in turn offer career networking and mentoring. Many groups have active alumni associations which provide opportunities for continued involvement and support.

Social Interaction
Not only do fraternities & sororities provide friendship, scholarship, and service, they also have fun! Being involved in the Fraternity & Sorority community gives members the opportunity to interact with a variety of people, and have fun at the same time. Examples of activities include chapter weekend retreats, formal dances, fraternity/sorority mixers, BBQ's, and All-Greek events.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I determine which chapter is best for me?

The best way to decide if a chapter is a good "fit" is to meet current members and ask questions. Fraternity & Sorority info sessions and recruitment events are perfect opportunities to learn more information about each fraternity and sorority.

What are the financial obligations?

Costs to be a part of a sorority or fraternity differ greatly from chapter to chapter. Traditional fees include new member fees, initiation fees as well as semester dues. Please consult each chapter in which you are interested to obtain membership costs.

Do Greek chapters provide housing?

Housing is currently unavailable for fraternity and sorority chapters at CSU San Marcos.

Is there hazing?

California State University San Marcos expects that all members of recognized student organizations will observe and fully comply with the State of California Educational and Penal Code requirements on hazing. All students are expected to adhere to regulations set forth by their respective regional/inter/national organization, the State of California, and the University concerning hazing. California State University San Marcos prohibits hazing by any recognized student organization. In order to foster positive relations within the CSUSM Greek community, all new members sign a no-hazing agreement upon joining a fraternity or sorority. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Nicki Croly, Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life (760-750-4952), or the University Hazing Education Team (UHET)

How much time will I have to put into it?
