What is Sustainable Design?
The intention of sustainable design is to "eliminate negative environmental impact completely through skillful, sensitive design."
Principles of Sustainable Design
- Low-impact materials: choose non-toxic, sustainability produced or recycled materials which require little energy to process.
- Energy efficiency: use manufacturing processes and produce products which require less energy
- Quality and durability: longer-lasting and better-functioning products will have to be replaced less frequently, reducing the impacts of producing replacements.
- Design for reuse and recycling: "Products, processes, and systems should be designed for performance in a commercial 'afterlife'."

What is LEED?
The LEED green building certification program encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through a suite of rating systems that recognize projects that implement strategies for better environmental and health performance.
