Ricky Arellano is an ambitious first year student who is already making strides to define his college experience at CSUSM.
As a commuter student, the criminal justice major drives over 50 miles each way Monday through Friday to get to campus from the City of Perris in Southwest Riverside County. His dedication to succeed at CSUSM is reflected in his desire to get involved and be an active member of student life.
Why did you choose CSUSM?
I chose Cal State San Marcos because I wanted to be near home and because it is located in such a great area. The beach is nearby and my family, who live in San Diego, is just a few minutes away.
As a freshman on campus, what do you hope to accomplish this year?
I just hope to get involved as much as I possibly can. I really want to be a part of campus organizations such as Tukwut Life, ASI or O-Team. In high school I wasn't really involved that much except for a few sports. Getting involved at CSUSM is a huge stepping stone into my future and will make my time on this campus really valuable. I would also like to pass my classes and maintain a really good GPA. Mostly I hope that I can help other students get involved and share these lifelong experiences with them.
Why is it so important for you to get involved? As a commuter student, why do you make it a point to attend campus events?
It's important for me to get involved because these are the things that will make or break my college experience. I want to graduate from this campus knowing that I made fun, exciting memories with the amazing people that make up this community. As a commuter student I do make it a point to attend every event I possibly can, even if it means getting home really late. I want to be a part of the student life on this campus and I don’t want to use distance as an excuse to miss out on these opportunities.
Why do you think it's important for commuter students to attend campus events?
I believe it's important for commuter students to attend campus events because it's a great way of meeting new people and developing amazing relationships. Since the semester began, I have attended almost every Friday night event and I have already met so many cool people. It’s also just a lot of fun to hang out with other students and participate in these great events. I know commuting is a struggle, especially if you live far, but I promise it is so worth it.
What are you future goals?
I hope to get my bachelor’s in criminal justice and eventually go into law enforcement. After spending some time as a police officer, I hope to continue my career by working to become an FBI agent.
