Jackie Duerr

I am thrilled to join the Academic Success Center team! The passion that drives me in supporting students comes from my own educational path, which was not without bumps in the road. As a transfer student with a learning disability, I found strength through the support and guidance of others as they taught me how to learn and advocate for myself. After obtaining both my B.A. in Psychology and my M.S. is Counseling and Guidance for Higher Education from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, I was determined to “paid it forward” by supporting underrepresented and transfer students in any capacity possible. And now, I am bringing this energy in as the Director, and I look forward to creating holistic programs and services for all students here at CSU San Marcos.

I am currently pursuing my Ed.D. in Educational Leadership so I can find new, innovative ways to support students. When I am not working or studying, I am playing at the beach, hanging out with my cats, or BBQ’ing with friends and family. It’s a good life.

My unsolicited advice: I believe that every student has their own path to success. To find it, sometimes it helps to just have someone to talk to. Whether it's with me or another ally here at CSUSM, your friends, or family, don't be afraid to let others in along your educational path. Here at the ASC, we hope you feel comfortable to come in and make this a resource and support for you. Please do not hesitate to drop by!

Hello! I have been at CSUSM 14 years and love it here. I adore working with university students, both one-on-one and in groups. I am dedicated to diversity, inclusiveness, equity, access, multiculturalism and social justice. I believe in open communication and fostering relationships. I strive to connect authentically with students, colleagues and our wider community members.

I majored in English and French Comparative Literature at a small school on the East Coast, and I also got a French M.A. on the East Coast. I taught high school French for two years and realized that, while I love students, I wanted to design, create, lead, and run programs for students (rather than teach classes). Prior to coming to CSUSM, I worked first for Study Abroad advising sending students to Cairo and then for Foreign Fulbright bringing Master’s and PhD students from foreign countries to the U.S. Because advising and programming for our diverse student body are professional passions, I completed in August 2019 an M.A. in Education with a Concentration in Counseling and Trauma-Informed Care. I am also an internationally certified tutor and tutor-trainer who oversees all ASC tutors.

I have an open door and love connecting. Stop by anytime!

What are some small things that make your day better?

I love listening to music, going to eat, and spending time with my family.

What show(s) do you recommend for a TV binge session?

The Office and Greys Anatomy.

Favorite class you've taken at CSUSM(or somewhere else) and WHY?

It is hard for me to decide on just one but HD 381 was very interesting. This class focused on youth violence. I really enjoyed this class not only because of the content but the professor I had made it even more interesting.

What's the best way to start the day?

I like to wake up and start the morning off with coffee, breakfast, then shower and have time to do my makeup. Hopefully, leave early enough to beat traffic.

I can't just choose one! GBST 300. PSYC 393. PSYC 332. A&P 177 and 178. Why?? Mostly because the professors I had were  so awesome and and really knew their material! These classes were so interesting for me and I learned a lot a lot.

What is the most interesting place you've traveled?

Spain... and more to come soon!

What are some small things that make your day better?

The GYM! And food.

Favorite class you’ve taken at CSUSM (or somewhere else) and WHY?

My favorite class I've taken so far is HIST 131, because it goes over American history in the 20th century and into present day, and it shows how society has evolved in that time.

What show(s) do you recommend for a TV binge session?

Definitely The Punisher, Daredevil and Dexter!

What's the best way to start the day?

I like to wake up early, do an hour of yoga, then shower and take another hour to get changed and ready for the day! Then I prepare a quick breakfast and make sure I have everything I need for my classes that day.
