Jackie Duerr

I am thrilled to join the Academic Success Center team! The passion that drives me in supporting students comes from my own educational path, which was not without bumps in the road. As a transfer student with a learning disability, I found strength through the support and guidance of others as they taught me how to learn and advocate for myself. After obtaining both my B.A. in Psychology and my M.S. is Counseling and Guidance for Higher Education from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, I was determined to “paid it forward” by supporting underrepresented and transfer students in any capacity possible. And now, I am bringing this energy in as the Director, and I look forward to creating holistic programs and services for all students here at CSU San Marcos.

I am currently pursuing my Ed.D. in Educational Leadership so I can find new, innovative ways to support students. When I am not working or studying, I am playing at the beach, hanging out with my cats, or BBQ’ing with friends and family. It’s a good life.

My unsolicited advice: I believe that every student has their own path to success. To find it, sometimes it helps to just have someone to talk to. Whether it's with me or another ally here at CSUSM, your friends, or family, don't be afraid to let others in along your educational path. Here at the ASC, we hope you feel comfortable to come in and make this a resource and support for you. Please do not hesitate to drop by!

Favorite class you’ve taken at CSUSM (or somewhere else) and WHY?

My favorite class has been SOC 320 (Sociological Theory), as it highlights various sociologists and their respective focus of study.  This course provided a variety of research examples and really gave me a comprehensive understanding of how sociology has developed.

Favorite restaurant/place to eat in San Marcos?

I really like getting subs and potato wedges at Vons.  I love getting the iced latte from the coffee cart in between Academic Hall and Craven.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Resting, eating, and drinking water.

What’s the best way to start the day?

I like to wake up on time, prepare my meals, and get my outfit ready. When I come to school I like to feel clean, fresh, and presentable because I know I'm going to be spending half of my day on campus.

What do you enjoy about your college experience thus far?

My favorite part of my college experience is that I get to meet people that are trying to achieve the same thing as me, which is the acquisition of knowledge.  I also like to apply the information I learn in class and presented by the faculty to issues affecting our local and global communities.

What show(s) do you recommend for a TV binge session?

I would definitely say either Game of Thrones or Sons of Anarchy.

Criminal Minds!

What are some small things that make your day better?

Having time to get coffee and when my roommates send me pictures of my dog.
