Get Activated! Summer 2019 Faculty Workshops

  • When: June 6, 17, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27
  • Time:  All workshops are from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm, lunch included.

Compensation:  $100 in professional development funds for attending the full workshop session and designing a learning activity using a technique aligned with that level of knowledge (Creating an Engaged Classroom with Active Learning Techniques series) or completing a related learning object (Modern Media for Teaching and Learning series).

Mix and match from each series to choose your own adventure. While you can attend all eight options, you can only get professional development for up to five (5) excluding the OER workshop. You must attend the full session and complete a learning activity or related learning object to get the funds.


Finding Open Education Resources (OER)*

Learn how to find OER and library resources in your discipline and work with these resources.  We'll introduce you to the OER repositories, search engines and other sources of free educational materials, as well as search strategies for optimizing your results.  The goal is to locate a no-cost collection of resources aligned with your course learning outcomes that will enable you to participate in the CALM initiative and earn up to $1,000 in professional development funds by reducing the cost of your course materials by 30% or more.  

* Open Education Resources are materials created under Creative Commons, a public copyright license that gives others permission to use, share or modify the work.  OER include images, videos, textbooks, learning modules, assessments  and entire courses.

Creating an Engaged Classroom with Active Learning Techniques

In this group of workshops you'll explore active learning techniques that you can apply to various classroom settings, from seminar to large lecture.  Each day will be devoted to investigating activities designed to promote a different level of learning, so you can choose just those workshops that meet your needs.  Along the way we'll discuss strategies for managing classroom discussions, activities and group projects.  Participants have the option of attending in-person or via Zoom.

Compensation:  $100 in professional development funds for attending the workshop and designing a learning activity using a technique aligned with that level of knowledge.

  • June 26 - Promoting Creative Thinking, Synthesis and Evaluation

Modern Media for Teaching and Learning

While many of the foundations of visual communication remain unchanged, the proliferation of new delivery methods has created a new media landscape. This represents an opportunity, but can be confusing. In this group we offer hands-on experience with a range of media tools you can incorporate into your teaching and student assignments. 

Compensation:  $100 in professional development funds for attending a workshop and completing a related learning object. 

  • June 20: Easy Media Creation and Social Media (requires a smart phone) Can students d a video project just using a smart phone?  Yes, with the right preparation.  In this workshop you'll learn how this can be done and what you can expect.
  • June 25: Media Production - Incorporating Multiple Media Elements into a Project Some projects, and especially storytelling, lend themselves to media. Efficient media production is all about workflow. Let’s take a closer look at how assignment design, structuring workflow and expectations can help students create media projects and minimize technical issues.
  • June 27: Become a "StoryMap Tour Guide" (requires a smart phone) The GIS-based Story Map Tour is an easy to learn smartphone-based tool that can be used in virtually any discipline to create a virtual tour incorporating maps, images and text descriptions.  Send students out to photograph campus landmarks, plant species locations, public art, historical points of interest, billboards and public advertisements, or any other aspect of their physical environment.
