Dr. Elizabeth Matthews has accepted appointment to the position of interim dean for
the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences, effective August
Dr. Matthews joined CSUSM as an assistant professor in the Political Science Department in 2007, and now has a joint appointment with the Department of Global Studies. She was promoted to the rank of professor in 2016.
Dr. Matthews has served in leadership roles such as program director and founding
chair of the Department of Global Studies, chair of the Global Commitment Initiative,
and chair of WASC Writing Team 3. She was also a member of the CHABSS Strategic Planning
Team in 2012. In the last two years, Dr. Matthews led solution-oriented discussions
with colleagues, and was a leader in helping the college navigate the mandated Chancellor’s
Office executive orders in 2017-18.
Currently, Dr. Matthews serves as a CSUSM representative on CSU Academic Senate, faculty director for Civic Learning, in Community Engagement, and is the CHABSS faculty fellow for curriculum. Dr. Matthews is the 2013-2014 recipient of the Harry E. Brakebill Distinguished Professor Award. Her continued dedication to our students, the college, and campus community is exemplary.
This appointment was made in consultation with Vice Provost Haddad and the CHABSS interim dean search advisory committee.
