Dean's Message 2022

Dean Liora Gubkin
Dean Liora Gubkin

Welcome!

We began our fall semester welcoming students, faculty and staff back to campus. What a delight it was to participate in the new student convocation and experience the positive energy in the arena filled to capacity with incoming students, their families, and supporters! As a new dean, I have enjoyed meeting many of our staff and faculty for the first time, including our new staff and lecturer colleagues, as well as our 10 new tenure-track faculty who will enrich our college with their research and teaching interests.

In addition to the new faculty and staff, we also have new curricular opportunities for students. We are pleased to offer Linguistics as a new major. It joins the 25 undergraduate degree programs, 31 minors, 5 master’s, and 2 certificates available to our students. Collectively, the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences (CHABSS) offers an exciting variety of degrees and programs that make up the core of a liberal arts education at CSUSM. Students in CHABSS courses master skills and technologies essential for professional success in a 21st-century, interdependent global society. CHABSS also provides many opportunities outside the classroom including career mentoring, student clubs, research opportunities, internships, and Arts & Lectures to name just a few. You can learn more about our many activities and opportunities happenings in the College on our calendar or come visit the new media wall located at the entrance of the Social Behavioral Sciences Building!

This fall semester we will also take time to focus on the future through strategic planning. Each month through the fall, we will host conversations on a theme from the newly adopted university strategic plan The Power of CSUSM. Whether you are a student, faculty, staff, or community supporter, we value your input on how CHABSS can continue to lead our community. I invite you to learn more about our college strategic planning and participate!

I’d like to close with sincere congratulations to the faculty who recently earned tenure, promotion, and/or emeritus status. Your passion for teaching, research, creative activity and service inspires us all.

Best wishes to everyone this academic year!
