Jean Dreyfus Summer Scholars Fellowship

Call for Jean Dreyfus Summer Scholars Applications! 


The CSUSM Chemistry & Biochemistry Jean Dreyfus Summer Scholars Fellowship provides students with a rich opportunity to conduct research while working closely with a chemistry faculty research mentor.  This 10-week summer program provides students with an intensive research experience along with seminars for enrichment.   Students will receive a stipend for participating in the program.  The Jean Dreyfus Summer Scholars is sponsored by The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation 


Program Schedule – Jean Dreyfus Summer Scholars must participate in all of these program activities 

  • The program will begin Monday, June 3, with a Kick Off from 9am-12:00pm. Programmed events or activities will be scheduled every Wednesday from 12:00pm-1:15pm. 
  • Poster Showcase - The culminating event for the Jean Dreyfus Summer Scholars program will be a poster showcase on Thursday, August 8, from 9am-12pm.   


Work Schedule: 

  • Participating students should expect to work on-site with their faculty mentor 40 hours per week, which includes attending all programmed events.  
  • The research allowance is expected to be $5,500, which includes a $4,500 stipend and $1,000 in supplies and other requirements to support of your research project.   
  • Parking passes will be provided for students that qualify.  To qualify for a parking pass, participants must not be enrolled in summer classes or be employed by the University or any of its auxiliary organizations. 


A complete application includes: 

  1. Sponsoring faculty mentor 
  2. Project title 
  3. Short personal statement about yourself and interest in the program (500 word max) 
  4. Resume or CV 


The application period begins February 18, 2019 and closes on March 29, 2019 at midnight A brief informal interview with the search committee will be conducted for the selected finalists during the week of April 9 prior to final selection. Participants will be notified by April 15.  


Other Criteria: 

Due to the structure of the funding for Summer Scholars, please note: If students are receiving any type of compensation from the University or its auxiliaries, Diane Gephart should be contacted prior to acceptance to make sure there is no conflict with the distribution of funds.
