Deya Roy, Ph.D.

Deya Roy earned her Ph.D. in Communication from University of Connecticut in 2017. Subsequently, she started a position as Post-Doctoral Fellow at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. In 2019, Dr. Roy moved across the country as a Lecturer for California State University San Marcos.

Dr. Roy is an organizational communication scholar. Her research interest lies in understanding how online communities affect health decision-making in diverse communities. In particular, Dr. Roy looks at how individuals from varied gender/sex, socio-economic status, and race use online communities and the impact said institution has on individuals’ health decision making. Her research curriculum also involves studying effective ways to create health interventions in order to minimize risky health behaviors and maximize positive health decisions. Dr. Roy has published in several top journals including the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media and presented her research at national and international conferences. She has received Top Paper Awards from the National Communication Association in both the Mass Communication and Visual Communication Divisions.

Dr. Roy has taught numerous courses over her career. At CSUSM, she has taught different courses across the department’s three different programs—Communication, Media Studies, and GEO. Specifically, Dr. Roy has taught Communication and Gender, Media Theory, Intercultural Communication, Research Methods and Design, Global Media to name a few.
