Health and Safety

On March 14, 2022, CSUSM announced an update to campus masking guidelines, regardless of vaccination status:

  • Masks/face coverings are required in indoor instructional spaces (classrooms, teaching laboratories, learning centers and Kellogg Library).
  • Masks/face coverings are required in the the Student Health and Counseling Services Building.
  • Masks/face coverings are encouraged in all other indoor spaces (such as offices, conference rooms and indoor event spaces) and strongly recommended when participating in indoor gatherings and events lasting at least one hour, with 10 or more individuals.
  • Masks are not required for gatherings and events held outdoors.

While masking will no longer be required in non-instructional indoor spaces, we expect that many members of our community will choose to continue masking, which is fully supported and encouraged. Public health leaders have emphasized the increased protection that face coverings provide as well as the value of masking, particularly for those who are immunocompromised or otherwise medically vulnerable.

Our safest defense against the spread of COVID is vaccination. The CSU updated its vaccination policy on Dec. 22, announcing that all students and employees who come to campus must be vaccinated and receive their booster or receive a medical or religious exemption. Anyone who has received a medical or religious exemption is required to participate in a weekly on-campus testing program

A majority of our classes are being taught with an in-person component this spring, but there are a variety of other formats, including synchronous online, asynchronous online, blended, hybrid, and live and online. A website has been created to help students understand the differences in format. The class schedule was shaped by student input and designed to offer maximum flexibility with in-person, online and hybrid options.

Academic Advising, the Library, and Learning & Tutoring Services have resumed in-person support.

Campus Life

It is our goal to give students who are ready for on-campus experiences the opportunity to be fully immersed in student life. We have a full calendar of events throughout the semester.

Most of our campus spaces have returned to in-person operations and services. Dining Services is also ready to serve you, and all campus eateries are open. The University Bookstore is open for in-store shopping.
