Instructional Support

Consistent with Executive Order 926, the ADA and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, CSUSM is committed to ensuring that the campus web environment and all course materials are accessible for everyone, especially those with disabilities.

The CSU requires faculty to provide accessible materials as part of their Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI). The Accessible Technology Initiative calls for accessible classroom materials and includes all course materials, publisher materials/websites/companion sites, Cougar Courses content, and university websites. Existing material may need to be revised or reformatted to allow access to all viewers/students.

Instructional and Information Technology Services (IITS) has been specifically tasked for providing administrative oversight to ensure compliance with ATI. Faculty are strongly encouraged to consult with IITS accessibility specialists and instructional developers before selecting publisher materials/websites/companion sites to make sure the content is accessible. They are also urged to seek guidance and training on how to ensure all course materials they select and create are accessible to meet both Federal and CSU mandates.

More information can be found at: CSUSM Accessibility or email ada@csusm.edu with questions.

Captioned Audiovisual Material

All audiovisual material needs to be captioned for the hearing impaired. Faculty need to be very careful when using YouTube clips because they are not always accurately captioned and will need to be checked prior to using them in class. It is important to keep in mind that CSUSM does have a mechanism to caption video material and more information can be found at: Caption Request Form

Requests for captioning can take 24-72 hours, excluding weekends to complete. Contact ada@csusm.edu with questions.
