CSUSM’s Nonprofit Management and Leadership Certificate program provides a broad overview of how nonprofit organizations are structured and the necessary skills needed to accomplish the organization’s mission and goals. Real-world course content will prepare you to respond to the increasingly complex, dynamic and challenging nonprofit management environment.

  • AUDIENCE

    This program is designed for:

    • Nonprofit professionals seeking to advance to higher-level administrative or CEO-level positions
    • Individuals with a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree and management experience
    • Professionals from another industry who are interested in transitioning into the nonprofit sector
    • Human Development or other students who are interested in pursuing a career in the nonprofit arena (with prior approval)

  • COURSE TOPICS

    Nonprofit Management Principles and Practices

    This overview course covers a broad range of topics that will set the foundation for the overall program. Topics include the history, current and future state of the sector, marketing and communications, corporate culture and strategic thinking, human resource development, philanthropic fundraising and general management approaches.

    Legal and Ethical Issues and Risk Management

    This course focuses on the increasing legal, regulatory, insurance and accountability demands increasingly impacting nonprofit organizational functioning and compliance. Ethical issues and expectations of the nonprofit sector are also discussed.

    Financial, MIS and Technology Management

    This course provides an overview of the systems necessary to support a successful nonprofit organization such as: financial knowledge, management information systems and data analytics, and the use of new technological and media tools to reach clients, supporters and volunteers.

    Executive Leadership and Board Governance

    This course emphasizes the need for new and dynamic leadership and governance approaches in the nonprofit sector. The concept of leading change is also explored, along with how to support organizational and new program development, growth and sustainability. The importance of embracing social entrepreneurship concepts and tactics to remain relevant and solvent is introduced.

    Capstone Project

    Participants select an issue that their agency is currently facing and develop an action plan to work toward a solution.

  • INSTRUCTORS

    Dom Betro, ACSW

    Dom Betro is a faculty member teaching human service management, leadership and social entrepreneurship at CSU San Marcos and CSU San Bernardino; Notre Dame University; La Sierra University and UC Riverside. Betro was most recently (1985-2018) the chief executive officer of Family Service Association, a leading nonprofit organization in Riverside/San Bernardino counties.

    Local industry leaders and subject matter experts will be included as guest lecturers and faculty members.
