Preferred Name Procedures

CSUSM recognizes students may identify themselves by a name other than their legal name.  Acknowledging this, students may have their first name changed to a preferred name that better reflects their identity.

To register your preferred name, submit a request on MyCSUSM in your Student Center. It can take up to three business days for the request to be reviewed and approved, and five business days after approval for the preferred name to be reflected in the various third party platforms utilized by the campus community.

University offices are only able to look up student records by student ID or legal name. It is recommended you bring your student ID card with you when requesting assistance from any department on campus. Your preferred name will be displayed.

If you are changing your name mid-semester, please notify your instructors to avoid grading discrepancies.

How to Change Your Legal Name

Legal names can be changed at CSUSM with the proper documentation; a state issued driver's license and an original signed Social Security card reflecting the new first and/or last name. Processing for name changes is done within the Office of the Registrar by filling out a "CSUSM Change of Legal Name" card and supplying the stated documents above.

If you are not a United States citizen, you must show a valid passport and photo ID reflecting the new legal name. Students employed by the university should notify Human Resources of the change.
